We are proud to help raise awareness for PKU (phenylketonuria) during the month of May by sponsoring a Push-Ups for PKU Challenge!
Help Us Raise Awareness for PKU
From May 1 to 31, Nutricia will donate $10 for each video you post on Facebook or Instagram of you doing (or trying to do!) at least 5 push-ups. Donations up to $3,000 total will go to PKU News, the creators of How Much PHE, a critical PKU community support organization.
Participating in the push-ups for PKU challenge is as simple as 1, 2, 3!
- Record a video of yourself, your family or your friends doing (or trying to do) 5 push-ups. You don’t have to be a pro – try your best and have fun!
- Upload and post your video on Facebook or Instagram.
- Don’t forget to make your hard work count by including #PushUps4PKU and #NutriciaConnect on your video post.
Challenge Others
Help us spread greater PKU awareness and keep the challenge going. Nominate family members or friends to join you in the push-ups for PKU challenge by tagging them on your post.
What is PKU?
Phenylketonuria, or PKU, is a rare genetic disorder that a child inherits from both parents. For a child to be born with PKU, both parents must either be carriers of PKU or have PKU themselves.
PKU occurs due to a defect in the gene that helps make the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), which in turn interferes with a person’s ability to metabolize, or process, the amino acid phenylalanine (PHE). Amino acids, like PHE, are the building blocks of protein found in food and the human body. Consuming too much PHE from food can lead to a toxic build-up of PHE in the blood and brain of a person with PKU.
Without management, this build-up of PHE will cause brain damage. Presently, there is no cure for PKU, but it can be managed effectively with proper diet and special nutritional products designed for people with PKU.
Education and Support
Learn more about PKU by accessing our TEMPLE (Tools Enabling Metabolic Parents Learning) video and booklets, available in a variety of languages. Find TEMPLE, additional guides and resources for all ages, as well as inspiring PKU videos and podcasts on our Education & Support page.
Tell Someone New About PKU
Nutricia has a series of educational resources to help increase awareness and knowledge about various PKU- and low protein diet-related topics. The topics include helping others, such as grandparents or teachers understand more about the PKU diet. Download and share a guide with someone new.
